Royal commission report makes preventing institutional sexual abuse a national responsibility

The study and discussion of child sex offending is replete with stereotypes of predators and molesters who prey on children. These stereotypes are often used to characterise child sexual abuse as the problem of a deviant minority, and so the only available response is to identify and incarcerate those responsible. In contrast, in its final report, released today, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse presented a socially and historically contextualised understanding of child sexual abuse. While accepting that some institutional abusers are “fixated, persistent” paedophiles, the commission found the majority are not.

Abuse survivor says conviction rate 'a joke'

A Dunedin survivor of historic abuse in state care says the number of prosecutions resulting from a national listening service is ''a joke''. Figures released to the Otago Daily Times, following an Official Information Act request, showed just two offenders had been successfully prosecuted as a result of referrals to police by the Confidential Listening and Assistance Service (CLAS).

Deaf Children abused by priests, nuns & staff at St. Rita School (Catholic Residential School in Cincinnati)

Over 350 children have been abused at St Rita School for deaf and amongst the criminal pedophile priests Father Paul Klenke - who died in 1983. The victim in this video speaks out against the fact that this abusive priest molested her and her late brother. She states all the boys were innocent, and wishes they were strong enough to tell their story. Some witnesses to the Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA) Inquiry said they were treated like child convicts.

Others claimed they were forced to eat their own vomit, preyed upon by serial sexual predators and one was told he was the product of an “evil and satanic relationship”. The poverty-stricken youngsters were among the most vulnerable in society and their experiences dated from 1922 to 1995.

Irish baby name among top ones to watch in 2017

The Irish girl’s name Caoimhe has been listed among a hot seven baby names which are blowing up online and set to be big in 2017, according to an “expert source for baby names” the Baby Name Wizard.

According to the Wizards the seven names they selected – Caoimhe, Elia, Prescott, Brontë, Winston, Aviana/Avianna and Wolf – are where baby names are headed in 2017. The site states that while “none of them currently rank among the top 500 names boys or girls. But based on search traffic, forum chatter and trend arrows, they're good bets to be part of the next baby name wave.”

How long more must adopted people have to wait?

As the law stands, an adopted person has no way of accessing their medical history. They have no way of finding out if there’s a history of heart disease in the family. Or cancer or any number of hereditary diseases, writes Clodagh Finn.

Nun accused of abuse has risen from the dead New Zealand

A nun accused last year of child abuse in Australia has apparently risen from the dead and is living in Christchurch.  Sister Bernard Mary was a central figure in a Queensland court case last year alleging abuse at a Brisbane orphanage in the 1950s and 1960s.
Trustees for her order, the Sisters of Nazareth, claimed in documents filed in the Queensland Supreme Court last July that she was dead.  But the Catholic Church said Sister Bernard, in her 60s, lived in Christchurch, where she leads the New Zealand order.
