Children were beaten with crucifixes, mocked if they were Protestants or Jewish and subjected to routine sexual abuse at orphanages run by Catholic nuns, an inquiry has found.
The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI) set out harrowing details of life at Smyllum Park orphanage in Lanark, as well as at Bellevue House in Rutherglen, which were run by the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul as “places of fear, coercive control and threat”.
