The calls to the Burlington Free Press newsroom keep coming. The voices are a bit shaky. The stories are all too familiar.
The callers speak of childhoods filled with poverty and illness, of families separated for months or years and sometimes reunited. They recall events that as children they didn't have words for, or that they were told not to tell.
They are former residents of St. Joseph's Orphanage, which operated on North Avenue from the 1880s until 1974 and was called home by a total of 13,000 people over the decades.
