Pat Flanagan column: Irish State has blood of 798 dead babies from Tuam Mother and Baby Home in Galway on its hands

While the Government might like to portray the country as an outward-looking secular egalitarian society, this week the world got a glimpse of real Ireland. The news that the death pit where 798 children’s bodies were dumped is to be dug up is seen as a sign this country is at last dealing with its dark and sinister past. But the disclosure the new National Maternity Hospital could be overseen by a religious order of nuns which has abused children takes us right back there.
